NEVER
ALLOW STRANGERS INTO YOUR HOME
June 14, 2004- As a result of the tragic homicide that took place
during the past week in Dover Township, the Manchester Police Department
would like to remind our residence to never allow strangers into their home.
Criminals look for different opportunities to commit crimes. Allowing a
stranger into your home or providing information on the phone to a stranger,
could very well make you or your family the victim of a serious crime. The
recent suspect in the murder of a 77 year old Dover
Township woman,
was soliciting magazine subscriptions door to door in the Pine Lake Park section of Manchester Township
prior to the murder. Off Duty Manchester Detective Joseph Howell took the
time to report the illegal group of solicitors. Manchester Officers responded
and located the group. The group of solicitors were investigated and issued
township ordinances for soliciting without township permits. It was apparent
that the group left Manchester
Township and began
soliciting in Dover
Township. A person that
wishes to solicit in Manchester
Township must first
apply to Manchester
Township for approval.
Prior to the issuance of the Permit a background check is conducted on the
applicant. If the solicitor is approved they receive a
photo identification from Manchester
Township to solicit.
Most private or retirement communities do not allow any form of solicitation
in their communities. The Manchester Township Police Department encourages
you to call Police if a stranger approaches your home or property. a quick call to report suspicious circumstances or a
stranger could prevent a crime from being committed.

BEWARE
OF TELEPHONE SOLICITORS
June 22, 2004--
The Manchester
Township Police Department is again receiving phone calls from citizen's
reporting phone solicitations for local, State, and National Police Associations.
It’s a fact that Manchester
Township's PBA Local 246 does not
solicit fund drives over the phone, nor do any legitimate Police Benevolent
Associations in the State of New
Jersey. Citizens should use extreme caution when
dealing with any solicitors, including phone solicitors. A phone solicitor
could be calling to obtain personal information that may be used to commit a
crime against you, or collection of monies for a misleading or bogus cause.
The monies received go to the creators of the fund, not to their represented
cause. Phony solicitors pray on human kindness and trust. The only way to
avoid being a victim is to say "you do not conduct such business over
the phone" and hang up. Do not provide any personal data to the
solicitor. Legitimate fund drives are announced by the soliciting group,
usually in the newspaper. Letters are then sent to citizens explaining the
purpose of the fund drive. The letters reflect that the group's solicitation
letter is on file with their respective prosecutor's office. If you choose to
give, do it safety and be sure your donation is being used appropriately.
Always report suspicious or criminal behavior to the Police.
